Front cover: Fascicularia pitcairnifolia Although barely succulent, this stunningly beautiful bromeliad can be easily forgiven for that and is sure to attract comment from the neighbours. It comes from Chile from as far as 44° South, and withstands light frosts in a sheltered raised bed or rock garden. The leaves are usually about 30cm long but can grow longer, and turn this rich red colour only when the plants are flowering. Sometimes considered as a subspecies of F bicolor, which occurs a little further north in central Chile.

We show here a plant grown in the Cheshire garden of Chris Hynes, who also supplied the photo.
